When it was founded in 1990, the Marianne Werefkin Prize—the first of its kind in Germany—was an art award dedicated exclusively to women artists. It was established by the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen 1867 and is enshrined in its statutes. In doing so, the association followed its tradition of honoring the outstanding achievements of women artists. The prizewinner will be announced at the opening on 25 November 2025, along with five other nominated positions.

Welteninsel

Die Obiger Galaxis
July 11 – 26, 2025
Axel Obiger, Space for Contemporary Art – Berlin

The term “world island” (Welteninsel) was coined by Immanuel Kant in his 1755 work General Natural History and Theory of the Heavens. Drawing on the astronomical ideas of his time—particularly those of Thomas Wright—Kant described a “world island” as an independent stellar system made up of countless stars and planetary systems. From a great distance, these appear as circular or elliptical nebulae—what we now understand as galaxies.

The group exhibition WELTENINSEL presents individual perspectives from 48 Berlin-based artists, each contributing their own conceptual or visual interpretation of this cosmic idea.

Sukzessive

FROMMANNSCHER SCULPTURE GARDEN
Presented by Jenaer Kunstverein
May 22 – July 12, 2025
“SUKZESSIVE”
A duo exhibition with Mira Friedrich
Curated by Hannah Chodura and Marlen Katz

As part of SUKZESSIVE, I present two site-specific installations that engage with material transformation and ecological cycles: "Carbon Texture" (2025), a hand-knotted charcoal tapestry (410 × 130 × 10 cm), and "Carbon Layer" (2025), a landscape intervention composed of 150 liters of crushed charcoal mixed with soil to create terra preta, alongside charred tree remnants (400 × 110 × 20 cm). Both works explore the aesthetic and ecological potentials of carbon-based materials and are embedded within the broader curatorial reflection on growth, decay, and renewal.

Artistic Research & Intervention

Petrified Times: Energising Past Futures
Museum für Naturkunde – Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Research

Tuesday, August 27 – Sunday, September 1, 2024
10:00–18:00 daily
Mineral Hall, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin

From August 27 to September 1, 2024, the Mineral Hall of the Museum für Naturkunde will host a unique artistic intervention. As part of the Naturwissen network, the project group “Petrified Times: Energizing Past Futures”explores two central energy regimes of our present age: coal and uraninite (nuclear energy). Both have significantly shaped the history of post-industrial societies and the planet itself.

The project group ‘Petrified Times: Energising Past Futures’ consists of Dr. Friederike Schäfer (FU Berlin), Dr. Elisabeth Heyne (MfN), Dr. Maike Weißpflug (Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management - BASE). The artistic works and the intervention were developed as part of the Netzwerk Naturwissen, an initiative of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and its partners from Berlin and Brandenburg.

Naturwissen Network on Tour:
Charcoal Workshop with Artist Ulrike Mohr
Saturday, April 13, 2024 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

This project is part of Netzwerk Naturwissen, an initiative of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and its partners across Berlin and Brandenburg.

Our collection preserves objects from various epochs of deep time, offering unique insights into Earth’s geological history. From prehistoric fossils to geological formations, each specimen tells its own story—allowing us to understand past ecosystems and the evolution of life on our planet. At the same time, these objects reflect the impact of human activity on nature and emphasize the importance of understanding, documenting, and preserving our environment. This exceptional collection not only testifies to botanical diversity but also opens up new ways of understanding the history and evolution of plant life.

The project group ‘Petrified Times: Energising Past Futures’ consists of Dr. Friederike Schäfer (FU Berlin), Dr. Elisabeth Heyne (MfN), Dr. Maike Weißpflug (Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management - BASE).
