The 5th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic, took place at Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin from April 5 to June 15, 2008. The exhibition series “Speculations,” curated by KUNSTrePUBLIK, was held at Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum from February 17 to March 23, 2008.
The project Neue Nachbarn features five trees growing on the roof of the Palace of the Republic in Berlin—specifically a birch, a black poplar, and a willow. The installation includes botanical classification signs, number tags for the trees (Palastbaummarken), life-size pigment prints of the trees on paper, and a location index – highlighting the idea, that, in their original constellation as found on the roof of the Palast der Republik and now relocated to the former Mauerstreifen, the trees would have fit precisely onto the roof of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
