New Neighbours

A Map of Replanted Palace of the Republic Trees (2008)
As part of the project SPEKULATIONEN, I relocated a number of trees that had spontaneously taken root on the roof of the former Palast der Republik in Berlin in the years following the fall of the Wall. These trees, growing in an unexpected place, had become silent witnesses to the city’s transformation.

I carefully removed and replanted them in a green space between Alte Jacobstraße, Kommandantenstraße, and Seydelstraße in Berlin-Mitte. The original planting coordinates from the rooftop were precisely reconstructed at the new site—translating their former spatial relationships into the new context.

The work included a map documenting the journey of each tree, connecting their original rooftop habitat to their new ground-level locations across the city.

SPEKULATIONEN, Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum (2008), was curated by Eva Hertsch / Adam Page, Birgit Schumacher / Uwe Jonas, Adam Sutherland, and KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V.
The map was designed by Ariane Spanier.
