The starting point for Ulrike Mohr’s work is not only the material of charcoal, but also its place of origin, the context in which it is formed, and the temporal dimension of its production process. In her spatial drawings, charred branches from abandoned allotment gardens, fragmented trees, or carbonized driftwood from the sea appear to float in space. Condensed into swarm-like formations, these fragile branches hang freely, tracing a black, geometric path of charcoal through the room—chaotic and directed at once. Through the process of carbonization, the branches have lost their original color, yet the details of their surface remain intact, permanently preserved. The viewer’s physical movement around and immersion into the spatial depth of the work enables an experience of its complexity, lightness, and identity. Ulrike Mohr increasingly dissolves the boundaries between material, space, time, and sound, creating new realms of interpretation and perception.
Von den Dingen is a work about materialized form, time, and voice.
